15th Anniversary of Fr. Healy's Death
It's hard to believe that Fr. Healy has been gone from this world for fifteen years. And yet, somehow his spirit, if not his words, ring in my ears each day. His words that God is love and mercy and that we must be that for our sisters and brothers still provide both the direction and the challenge in my life that helps me return to the teachings of Jesus through the Gospels. I hope his message, which was how he heard Jesus' message, holds the the same strength for you.
For two years now, I've been posting his homilies, although admittedly sometimes, like now, I'm a few weeks behind. (Thankfully I know that I am already forgiven!) Digitizing and posting the homilies is my way of remembering a man, a prophet in the sense that we are all prophetic people, that touched my life beyond measure, but also expressed to me personally during the waning days of his own life that he wanted to catalog his homilies. It's been my privilege to make that a reality for him all these years later.
Listening to Fr. Healy for so many years in person and now again each week, I know that a great homily doesn't just end with a good remembrance or a reminder, but a call of attention to our current realities in this day and time. And today, we face many of the same challenges when Fr. Healy first passionately preached his homilies. The challenges of war, intolerance, poverty, and unjust economic systems designed to reward a few at the expense of many. Not to be overlooked, Haiti still struggles, perhaps more so after the devastating earthquake. And there are many more opportunities for justice and love to prevail where we can make a difference — each of us in our daily lives and how we reach out to others, near and far.
So, my hope on this fifteenth anniversary, is that we can all remember Fr. Healy by doing something in his memory to benefit others. Of note is the opportunity to donate to the Haiti Committee of Our Lady Queen of Peace. You can click on the "donate" link in the upper left corner and 100% of your funds will go to support the work in Medor Haiti. To date, we've had very few donations from this site, so it would be especially nice today when a delegation from the committee is, in fact, returning from a week of work in Haiti.
Finally, at noon today a Mass will be said in memory of Fr. Healy at Our Lady Queen of Peace. For those that can join us, please do so. For all others, your prayers and good thoughts are always appreciated.
